Why do we need a library here?

The answer is the location and the inhabitants.
About 7,000 people live in the villages Al-Shmoh serves, between Bethlehem and Hebron. In the last few years area residents who want to learn on their own - an integral part of any solid education - have found the obstacles to knowledge have suddenly grown. Closures have increased. Lines at checkpoints have lengthened.
Today, if it's Friday morning and Nedal, a second-year university student in hotel and restaurant management, wants to read up on the history of French cuisine, it requires a day's burden. If it's 1 p.m. on a Thursday Rizek and Imraan, two high school students in nearby Jurt Al-Shammah, must finish researching their school projects before their school doors close. In the time she has free from taking care of her family and home in Al-Massarah Village, Najwa writes poetry. But she can refer only to the few books in the house for inspiration. A library open to Al-Shmoh students and the public at large would give villagers such as Nedal, Rizek, Imraan and Najwa - local people eager to learn on their own - a chance to get the information they need.

How will a library fit into Al-Shmoh's vision?
A library has always been central to the Al-Shmoh vision. With it we can better:
Offer information resources on demand.
Enable students who attend school as far as two hours away to do basic research closer to home.
Give students the chance to learn about the civilizations of other modern countries.
Provide villagers with enjoyable and constructive options for filling the significant downtime in the area.
Become a reference and journalism center, so residents know where to go when they have a question.

Who will make Al-Shmoh Library happen?
Local Villagers
A number of students have volunteered to help Al-Shmoh in any way they can. Skilled laborers such as taxi drivers and teachers provide corresponding services in exchange for their own education.
Volunteers from Abroad
As in the past, foreign guests will work on the ground and assess local needs firsthand.
Palestinian businesses
Response has been robust from Palestinian businesses asked to donate supplies they sell.
Donors
Ultimately, community support can only go so far without money. We need help from our friends abroad in paying for the materials as well as some labor.
Library Project Manager
Mahmoud Suleiman will manage the creation of the library. He is a founder of Al-Shmoh Cultural Center and our current chairman. A high-school teacher of science and mathematics, Mahmoud has a master's degree in physics and sits on the Palestinian Authority Curriculum Board. He volunteers six hours a week to tutor Al-Shmoh students in physics and mathematics. He and his wife, Abeer, have also given vital money to ensure Al-Shmoh's success and integrity.

What do we put in our library?
Books
We are focusing on books that amplify courses under way at Al-Shmoh as well as future courses now in preparation. Online services already enhance Al-Shmoh courses, but we believe students need resources they can literally grasp. The library will have four main sections:
Languages taught at Al-Shmoh: Arabic, English, Hebrew, French)
Traditional subjects, such as science, fine arts, mathematics, music, and film.
Reference: An Encyclopedia, dictionaries, thesauri, grammar books, atlases.
Periodicals: Newspapers, magazines, journals.
Women's health, education, and skills.
Children's books.

Furniture
Adolescents and teenagers already come to Al-Shmoh to "hang out" in the computer room. Only a library with comfortable chairs and tables, however, can provide students of all ages with the appropriate setting for long hours of reading.
Our future library is currently a 30-square-meter room in Al-Shmoh Center. We hope to line the walls with shelves, and fill the shelves with books of all subjects and sizes.

What does it all cost?
Total Cost
The projected cost of this project is 3365$, based on written prices Al-Shmoh shoppers collected from area stores. Operational and administrative expenses we will handle on our own.
Price List
The table below lists the quantities, prices per unit and total prices, for basic equipment we need for the library.
After checking West Bank bookseller's prices, we concluded that the local book market varies too widely for us to provide a good-faith estimate. In addition, books, unlike bookcases, are relatively easy to donate directly. Al-Shmoh Library welcomes all appropriate books.
